When the monsoon arrived in the coastal town of Devgarh, everyone expected heavy rain. But this year the rain did not stop. For three days and nights, dark clouds covered the sky and the wind roared through the narrow streets. The river beside the town kept rising, and people began to worry that the flooding would not abate.
Riya, a young civil engineering student visiting her grandparents, watched the situation carefully. Every morning she stepped outside hoping the rain would abate, but instead it continued to pour. Water slowly entered the lower houses near the riverbank. Shopkeepers lifted their goods onto shelves, and families moved their belongings to higher floors.
On the fourth day, the town council gathered in the community hall. Everyone asked the same question: when would the rain abate? Some people believed they could only wait. But Riya had another idea. She remembered a temporary drainage method she had studied in college.
Riya explained that if they cleared the blocked storm drains and dug a small channel toward the old irrigation canal, the water level might abate faster. At first, the older villagers doubted her plan. However, with no better option, they decided to try.
Dozens of volunteers worked together through the afternoon. They removed debris, opened the drains, and dug the channel carefully. By evening, something remarkable happened. The trapped water finally began to flow away from the streets. Slowly, the pressure on the riverbank started to abate.
Later that night, the rain itself also began to abate. The clouds thinned, and the sound of the storm softened. By morning, sunlight appeared for the first time in days.
People gathered outside their homes, relieved and smiling. The flooding had not disappeared completely, but the danger had started to abate. The town leader thanked Riya for her courage and quick thinking.
For Riya, the experience was unforgettable. She realized that sometimes problems do not simply abate on their own. Sometimes they need patience, teamwork, and one good idea.
